Układ urbanistyczny wielu ośrodków kształtowany był przez długie stulecia. Bardzo często starodawne trakty wchodziły w skład średniowiecznych i nowożytnych szlaków. Tym sposobem część z nich dotrwała do czasów współczesnych. Ciągi komunikacyjne istniejące w miastach już w średniowieczu określano osobnymi nazwami. Wiele z nich nawiązywało do miejsc, do których prowadziły lub obiektów, przy których stały. Skąd więc wzięła się nazwa brzeskiej ulicy Szkolnej, skoro nigdy nie istniała przy niej żadna szkoła?

W 1248 roku, dzięki przywilejowi lokacyjnemu wydanemu przez księcia wrocławskiego Henryka III Białego, założone zostało miasto Brzeg. Aż do XIX wieku obejmowało ono jedynie obszar dzisiejszego Starego Miasta. W pobliżu wytyczonych w średniowieczu granic Brzegu istniały wsie i powstawały przedmieścia. Jedną ze wsi zlokalizowanych niedaleko od miasta była Brzeska Wieś, którą w ciągu wieków kilkakrotnie przenoszono coraz dalej od fortyfikacji Brzegu. W końcu w XVIII wieku znajdowała się ona na obszarze obejmującym dzisiejszą ulicę Starobrzeską.

Poza granicami Brzegu przez stulecia istniało także Przedmieście Nowe Domy, które obejmowało obszar dzisiejszej ulicy Ofiar Katynia i zaliczane było do największych podmiejskich osiedli. Na tym przedmieściu już w XIV wieku istniał szpital i kaplica św. Krzyża, a od XVI wieku kościół cmentarny św. Trójcy. Świątynia ta była kilka razy przenoszona i w drugiej połowie XVIII wieku zlokalizowano ją na terenie dzisiejszego Brzeskiego Centrum Medycznego, na którym znajdował się wtedy cmentarz ewangelicki. Obok kościoła wzniesiono szkołę ludową, do której uczęszczały dzieci z okolicy.

Wśród nich byli również mali mieszkańcy Brzeskiej Wsi, w której nie było placówki edukacyjnej. Uczniowie szkoły ludowej przechodzili traktem łączącym wieś z Przedmieściem Nowe Domy. Przebiegał on przez cmentarz, czyli teren dzisiejszego Brzeskiego Centrum Medycznego, a następnie prowadził do dzisiejszej ulicy Starobrzeskiej.

Przez kilkadziesiąt lat XVIII i XIX wieku, aż do wybudowania w Brzeskiej Wsi szkoły, dzieci codziennie uczęszczały na zajęcia właśnie tą drogą. Była ona już wtedy nazywana Drogą Szkolną Brzeskiej Wsi (Brigischedorfer Schulweg). W końcu, wraz z rozwojem Brzegu na przełomie XIX i XX wieku, w części traktu, który nie obejmował cmentarza, wytyczono nową ulicę. Władze miasta nazwały ją Szkolną (Schulstrasse) właśnie na pamiątkę dawnego szlaku, który przemierzały dzieci z Brzeskiej Wsi do szkoły znajdującej się przy kościele św. Trójcy na przedmieściu Nowe Domy. Nazwa ta zachowała się do dziś.

Współcześnie mało kto zdaje sobie sprawę z genezy nazwy ulicy Szkolnej. Często sami mieszkańcy Brzegu zastanawiają się, dlaczego przy jedynej ulicy w mieście odwołującej się do placówki edukacyjnej nie istnieje i nie istniała szkoła. Jak widać, wcale istnieć nie musiała. Spacerując dziś ulicą Szkolną, warto więc pomyśleć o czasach, w których była ona zwykłym traktem łączącym Brzeską Wieś z Nowymi Domami.
