Dzień Pamięci Pomordowanych przez UPA

11 lipca to Narodowy Dzień Pamięci Ofiar Ludobójstwa, dokonanego przez ukraińskich nacjonalistów na obywatelach II Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej. W związku z obchodzoną w tym roku 80. rocznicą tych wydarzeń, w niedzielę, 9 lipca 2023 roku w kaplicy cmentarnej przy ul. Starobrzeskiej w Brzegu odbyła się Msza Święta upamiętniająca osoby pomordowane przez Ukraińską Powstańczą Armię, w której wziął udział Jerzy Wrębiak – Burmistrz Brzegu.

Podczas nabożeństwa obecna była również Prezes Towarzystwa Miłośników Lwowa i Kresów Południowo-Wschodnich, Alicja Heflich, Wicewojewoda Opolski, Tomasz Witkowski, Wicestarosta Powiatu Brzeskiego, Ewa Smolińska, radni miejscy oraz poczty sztandarowe. Zwieńczeniem uroczystości było złożenie wiązanek kwiatów ku pamięci ofiar, pod Pomnikiem Pamięci. Uczestnicy oddali w ten sposób hołd ofiarom mordów na Wołyniu i Galicji Wschodniej, dokonywanych w latach 1943-1945 przez Organizację Ukraińskich Nacjonalistów – frakcję Stepana Bandery, podporządkowaną jej Ukraińską Powstańczą Armię oraz ludność ukraińską uczestniczącą w mordach polskich sąsiadów.

Nie zabrakło też przemówienia osób związanych z Kresami Wschodnimi, w tym Burmistrza Brzegu.
